Shrimp, Shrimps and Strimps!
I LOVE SHRIMPS ....... as in ..... dem lil funny-looking crustaceans ...... not small men!
dat said ....... I found out something new ....... bout dat very ting ....... I been lovin fuh years ...... found out ...... that the plural of 'Shrimp' is ....... 'Shrimp' ..... AND ...... 'Shrimps'!! ........ did you know that? ....... I didn't!! ........ how could 'miss english' not know dat! ....... this one took me ...... all de way back tuh primary school ...... cuz tuh me ..... I swear ...... dat sheep and shrimp was in de same class ..... didn't we learn dat ...... sheep is sheep right tru ...... and dat shrimp in de same boat? ......
Wednesday ...... I ventured out ...... to do lunch with a friend ....... so there I was ...... chewin on some sweet, stew oxtail ...... when meh ears pick up de word "SHRIMPS" (or coulda even be "STRIMPS"!) ...... it was off de radio dat was playin in de restaurant ....... it went like dis ...... "and the winning play whe number is 32 - SHRIMPS" ...... well I nearly choke ....... ah say "SHRIMPS"!!!! ....... 'Shrimps' is ah word?" ...... singular and plural not suppose tuh be de same?! ...... anyway ..... my friend ...... although amused ..... and thinking the same thing too ....... was not as surprised as I was ...... cuz in her many years in the media ...... she had heard that ...... on countless occasions ....... she even told me that the Play Whe poster also has SHRIMPS ......
...... on meh way home (from lunch) ...... ah had ah lil stop tuh make ....... and as fate would have it ...... the only parking spot available ..... was right by de Lotto/Play Whe place ...... so yuh know ....... jus tuh maco ...... ah went eeen ...... cuz ah had tuh see dis poster with "SHRIMPS" on it ...... cuz all dis time ..... I still tinkin dat "shrimps" ...... jus wrong! ...... now mind you ..... I think the last time I played Play Whe ...... was some time in the early nineties ...... yuh ever check out dat play whe poster ...... how many passes yuh need tuh understand dat crap ..... iz like a flickin science ...... what is de 1/16 chart? ....... and what is de "spirit" ..... and wuz de story wit de angry asian man ..... is dat "de man"?! ..... "de man" dat people does always be referrin to ...... when dey say "de man play #" ...... anyway I digress ...... back tuh de story ...... yuh know de ting really have SHRIMPS on it!! ......
...... so ....... being totally bewildered at this point ....... by the thought of ..... not only saying de wrong ting on de radio ...... but also backin it up in print!!! ...... I had to investigate further ...... and ....... to my astonishment ....... after checkin de dictionary ...... and conducting a small survey ....... I discovered that only the dictionary knows ....... that the plural of 'shrimp' ....... is 'shrimp' AND 'shrimps' ...... everybody I surveyed said "shrimp" ...... so in de end ....... ah didn't feel too daft ......
.... but de moral of this story is ..... every day we learn something new ....... and I'm sure .... now ..... you have too ..... so the next time I hear someone say 'shrimps' ...... I won't choke ...... I'll just say "yes, please" ..... "Jumbo Pepper ones, thank you!"
