440 Murdered .... including an Engineer?!
As sure as night turns to day ..... EVERY DAY! ...... somebody gets shot in Trinidad ...... EVERY DAY!
and altho ...... it have real ting tuh gripe about ...... EVERY DAY ....... Iz doh feel tuh gripe ..... EVERY DAY ...... so ...... sometimes ah does jus have tuh choose meh battles ...... and sometimes ..... ah does jus feel tuh take ah lil break ..... but OH GORM ..... just when ah was suppose tuh break today ..... de headlines in de newspapers get meh stink!!!
You may recall ..... dat yesterday ..... I made ah quick mention of ..... de shooting dat took place at Corner Bar in Woodbrook ...... and tho at de time ..... when I heard it on de news ..... ah didn't really hear de whole story ...... I was still appalled ..... cuz somebody get kill ...... AGAIN!!!
...... dis morning now ...... as ah open up de papers tuh check de story ...... ah get pissed ..... instantly ...... cuz what was wit dem headlines?? ...... Engineer Killed ....... Engineer Shot Dead ......
...... now I doh know if is me ..... if I jus too sensitive ...... or if I does jus notice shit ....... cuz what de ass ..... being an ENGINEER have tuh do with anyting ...... ah man get kill!!! ...... if he was a Garbage Man ...... would de headline have read "GARBAGE MAN KILLED" ..... NO!! ...... and why did it seem like the ENGINEER'S life (or death) ...... was more worthy of print space?! ..... wha bout de small ass headline rite below ...... "Two Women abducted, shot dead" ...... wha bout dem .... two women who were just referred to as ..... WOMEN ....... what was their names ....... what was their occupation ..... and why was their headline so small ...... especially since their story ...... seemed much more horrific!!! ...... how come an abduction, rape and shooting to death ..... was relegated to fine print ...... but an ENGINEER's shooting ..... take over de whole front page??!!
And how was the Engineer's murder ...... different from the murders in past headlines below ..... how come none of those headlines .... had any big splash out names and job positions?!?! ....... perhaps none of them involved ..... young, black, promising Engineers!!? ..... and just young, black good-fuh-nuttins ..... making it easier .... tuh just give ah total murder figure fuh de day!?
Today's headlines ...... totally took me back ...... tuh de recent story ...... of de two SWEDES ..... who were murdered in Tobago ...... again ...... this was not a simple "2 murdered in Tobago" headline ...... it was ah "SWEDES / TOURISTS KILLED" headline ..... cuz just as it was a big deal ..... fuh an Engineer tuh get killed ...... it was a catastrophe ...... fuh tourists to be murdered ...... ah scene dat was only seen ...... as a threat tuh tourism in Tobago ..... which as far as I hear ...... done @#$%^& up ahready ....... and not because of no 'tourist' killings .... but because of de 440 general killings to date!!! ...... I wonder ...... if it was two Tobagonians who was murdered ...... would it have mattered ...... NO ..... because nobody seems to see the connection ....... of @#$%^& up tourism by killing out locals too!!!
But back tuh my point ....... wuz de scene wit playin it off ...... like some murders are more important than others ...... wuz de scene wit classin murder victims ..... is it dat de focus wrong ....... is it dat de newspapers just dotish ...... and only on sensationalism ..... is it dat I dotish fuh even bringin dis up ...... cuz as far as I see it ...... it shouldn't matter who yuh is ..... or what yuh is ...... or where yuh living ...... fact ah de matter is ...... we are all HUMANS ...... humans who dying like flickin flies and cockroach ..... actually no .... not cockroach ..... dey kinda hard tuh kill!
I'm just sayin ..... de murderers not discriminating ..... and our newspaper headlines shouldn't either!
.... unless is ah bandit dat get kill .... it really shouldn't matter if you're a Swede .... an Engineer .... or Women .... all should be treated equally!!! ..... and I know .... yes .... I live in a bubble!!

Girl, my friends from England had decided to rent a house in Tobago for two weeks. Well of course now you know they not coming and I don't blame them one little bit! I wouldn't want to come here either.

but think about this ...... Jamaica's population is approx. 2.8 mil ..... Trinidad's population is approx. 1.3 mil ..... so we just as bad per capita ......

True, I never thought about it like that. The news in Jamaica does the same thing though. It's headline news when a person from "uptown" is killed or a local personality. However, when it's a regular citizen, it's just another number. It's sad, but I think everyone is starting to get used to the increasing crime rates. Even when I read the newspaper I expect to read about a murder :-/

The point that we are missing in the Caribbean is that successive governments have bred a generation of disposable young black men. Society has failed them and this is the result, it is important to note in this light that his being an engineer is important...he chose not to buy the hype.
The problem or the site of conflict is that by choosing his path, he in fact did nothing to stand apart from the rest of this disposable generation. What these boys are is grist in the mill to keep society ticking over. Sad but true, we as individuals do nothing and expect something in return. The responsibility is ours to tell the gov't enough, but we move to gated communities, hang in exclusive clubs and abandon the mechanisms of broader society for our own belly button gazing needs

One vote is just the beginning. The problem in the Republic is that because of the bubbles the good of the nation falls by the wayside. I am not an idiot who believes that by changing my vote, I influence my
country...rather I have become an optimist that believes that change is possible. We are a young country, less than 50 and teething problems are par for the course, but there are antecedents that can guide. It is the responsibility of those who hold the civil construct in their hands to let those who have no information, or better yet the wrong information get it. This must be apolitical, it must come from community groups not social groups that we can ignore with a blase,look at dem white people, dem indian, dem negroes.
This calls for a reversion to society and its support structures - it is not the govt that has let us down...we have done this to ourselves.
Until we again value our neighbours, ourselves and take back our neighbourhoods, not by tearing down physical walls and opening burglar bars but rather by engaging on a personal level; our collective ass is dark.
